Sciatica

Back pain comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes, but when people are suffering lower back pain due to sciatic nerve pain, it’s pretty easy to identify. This pain involves the vertebral discs bulging out causing pressure on the sciatic nerve, but the good news is we have the ability to help relieve sciatic pain through a number of our natural treatment options.

What is Sciatica?

The technical name for this is Lumbar Radiculopathy, but sciatica is how it’s best known. Sciatica is caused when a bulging disc pushes out and puts pressure on the sciatic nerve and nerve roots, which is the longest nerve in your body. When this nerve becomes pinched or squeezed, people experience mild to severe pain depending on the location and how much pressure is being applied to the nerve. The vertebrae usually involved with sciatica include the L1-L5 vertebrae along with the S1    or the sacrum at the base of the spine.

Common causes of sciatica can include a herniated disc, degenerative disc issues, and spinal stenosis. When the bones, discs, or joints of your spine start to degenerate they can create bone spurs which can push into the sciatic nerve as well. This specific condition is what’s known as Spinal Stenosis. These causes don’t have to be debilitating and in fact, we can help prevent them and improve them with regular chiropractic care and other non-invasive treatments.
